Simon and Garfunkel were originally software developers in the 1960s and their early songs were rejected because they had software themes.

This early version of "Sounds of Silence" shows that they had good insight into the software development process...

Mounds Of Software

Artist: Simon & Garfunkel
Album: Sounds Of Silence

Hello software, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the mound of software

In restless teams I code alone
Coding's better on one's own
'Neath the halo of a desk lamp
I cast a String to make a time-date stamp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of an error light
Can't get it right
And touched the mound of software

And in the dis-play light I saw
Ten thousand co-ders, maybe more
Coders talking without speaking
Coders hearing without listening
Coders writing code that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the mound of software

"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Software like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the hells of software

And the coders bowed and prayed
To the E-X-E they made
And the form flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "No words of the license are smitten when the code installs
Whatever befalls..."
And whispered in the mounds of software
